«The Black Cat» is based on the short story with the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. More than any of Poe's stories, the original version of «The Black Cat» illustrates the human mind's ability to observe its own decay and also its ability to comment on its own destruction. Perversity and self-glorification are important facets that shape Poe's short story. It’s written as a farewell letter in which the main character expresses his thoughts from the firstperson perspective.

The music follows the protagonist very closly through the film. In search for its reality/identity sonorities move between organic sounds (small string orchestra) and synthetic sources (modular synthesizer). The music balances a fine line, moving back and forth from organic to synthetic, creating a sense of instability.
